2024’s Best Fun Videos For English Language Learners – So Far

My mid-year “Best” list posts continue…

I use short, funny video clips a lot when I’m teaching ELLs, and you can read in detail about how I use them in The Best Popular Movies/TV Shows For ESL/EFL (& How To Use Them). In short, there are many ways to use them that promote speaking, listening, writing and reading (including having students describe – in writing and verbally – a chronological description of what they saw).

You can see all previous editions of this list, as well as other “Best” lists related to videos, here.

Here are my choices for the past six months:

This is a dark video that should not be shown to younger students, but adolescents (especially boys) will likely love it. They can talk and write about what they see:

This video, though not funny, could prompt a good discussion among students, as well as having them just write about what they saw:

This one is a little weird, but I think students will like it:

A few Super Bowl videos over the years have been good ones for this kind of lesson, and here’s the one that will appear this year that would fit the bill:

There will also be this one from Arnold Schwarzenegger, which illustrates the ridiculousness of over-emphasizing “correct” pronunciation (also see YOU HAVE AN ACCENT, I HAVE AN ACCENT, EVERYBODY HAS AN ACCENT…. and VIDEO: “WE STIGMATIZE ACCENTS, BUT LANGUAGE BELONGS TO EVERYONE”):
