AI Writing Tools for the Classroom – Now Free for Teachers!

Khan Academy Writing Coach is now free for teachers—made possible by Microsoft!

At Khan Academy, our mission has always been to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. Today, we’re thrilled to announce a huge leap forward in achieving that mission. Thanks to our partnership with Microsoft, Khan Academy Writing Coach, our AI-powered writing assistant, is now available for free to all teachers!

Recently highlighted on 60 Minutes, this groundbreaking writing tool is designed to revolutionize how students improve their writing skills and how teachers support the writing process in their classrooms.

The challenge of writing instruction

Teachers know that students need frequent, detailed, and actionable feedback to improve their writing skills. However, the time and effort required to provide this level of feedback can be overwhelming and time-consuming.

For example, take a high school English teacher with 100 students. Spending just 10 minutes per essay draft would require nearly 17 hours of grading per round! It’s no wonder writing assignments often don’t happen as frequently as they should.

With only 25% of students meeting grade-level writing standards, now is the time to equip teachers with technology that can help solve this problem.

Meet Writing Coach

Writing Coach is an AI-powered writing tool designed by educators to empower teachers and students alike. Far from replacing the human connection that makes great writing instruction possible, Writing Coach enhances it.

How students benefit

Unlike other AI-powered writing tools, Writing Coach isn’t limited to giving feedback on sentence- or language-level issues alone, like grammar or spelling. Writing Coach goes beyond surface-level fixes to guide students through the entire writing process with the purpose of producing better writers. It enables the following:

  • Actionable feedback: Students receive clear, interactive highlights tied to specific parts of their essay.
  • Interactive revision: Students can ask clarifying questions and make revisions in real time.
  • Multiple drafts: After making edits, students can resubmit their essays for additional rounds of feedback.

Within seconds, the tool provides personalized feedback, highlighting areas like structure, thesis strength, use of evidence, and style. Importantly, Writing Coach does not do the writing for students. Instead, it acts as a coach, encouraging students to think critically about their work and make improvements independently.

  • It provides a comprehensive record of student progress, including drafts, feedback, and revisions—all accessible for teachers to review.
  • It keeps students’ interactions safe and transparent, with built-in moderation tools.

With this tool, teachers can shift from simply evaluating writing outputs, to focusing on the whole writing process. They can spend less time reviewing and more time doing what they do best: building relationships, fostering creativity, and helping students develop their voice.
