Brainpop’s New Tagline Isn’t A Bad Goal For Us Teachers To Have

I really liked this tagline from Brainpop’s latest email announcement.

It actually brought me down memory lane to my community organizing days (I was an organizer for nineteen year’s prior to becoming a high school teacher).

The late, great Ed Chambers, who was the executive director of the organization I worked for, the Industrial Areas Foundation, would tell this story to us to illustrate the kind of mindset a successful organizer needed to have:

One day, a father took his son out for a hike in the woods. He saw a deer, but instead of telling his son about it, he changed the direction of their walk so his son could see it on his own. Then, his son was able to shout, “Look, Dad! There’s a deer!”

It seems to me that this might be the same kind of mindset we teachers should consider striving for… (and is one of the reasons I’m a big fan of inductive learning, which I think promotes it).
