Last month, to kick off a 3-part series on taking AI “From Vision to Practice”, I invited my Khan Academy colleagues Chief Learning Officer Dr. Kristen DiCerbo and Senior Manager of School Partnerships Danielle Sullivan to chat about learning science in AI technologies. The conversation was fantastic and provided an in-depth look into the synergy that’s possible when artificial intelligence (AI) is applied to personalized learning platforms like ours at Khan Academy. With so much to unpack from this session, I’ll share some of what I learned below, and invite you to view the recording linked here. You can also catch the recaps of Part 2 and Part 3 on our blog.
Dr. DiCerbo centered her talking points around a fascinating point: when AI is used in a personalized learning platform that is already grounded in learning-science principles like the ones adopted by Khan Academy, the possibilities for student engagement and individual instruction are endless. This is not just a future prediction; it’s something that is happening right now across the 60+ schools using Khanmigo, our AI teaching assistant and student tutor. You can see how math instruction in Newark, New Jersey, has been transformed for students with the addition of Khanmigo.

One of the standout topics was the idea of creating synergy with teachers. Dr. DiCerbo emphasized how AI improves the teaching experience either by making tailored recommendations based on student activity on Khan Academy or by co-creating and extending lesson plans that depend on the teacher’s expertise. Khanmigo, for example, is designed to encourage a more direct and personalized connection with students.
Another exciting topic was the element of responsible innovation. It was inspiring to hear how industry champions like Khan Academy and others are investing time and resources to ensure that AI in education is ethical, beneficial, and responsible. I loved hearing Dr. DiCerbo express that AI should service, not drive, education.
The third highlight for me was the conversation around improving engagement. Dr. DiCerbo shared how AI-powered platforms adapt to students’ proficiency levels, learning styles, and pace. This dynamic learning path significantly boosts engagement, presenting content in a way that resonates with each student and makes learning more immersive than ever before. For example, students can say they are interested in Taylor Swift or football and get an entire concept explained to them using real-life examples of things they care about.
There’s no doubt that AI can indeed set the stage for a remarkable learning experience, and, it’s clear that we’re just scratching the surface of what’s achievable when AI and education unite—the sky’s the limit.
