Google’s AI For Education Announcements Continue To Be Underwhelming

Last month, Google made a bunch of announcements about Artificial Intelligence in education, and I was unimpressed (see GOOGLE MAKES A TON OF AI ANNOUNCEMENTS TODAY, BUT IT’S JUST ALL TALK WHEN IT COMES TO LEARNING TOOLS).

Today, they made a bunch of new announcements about AI in education, and these seem equally unimpressive (you can read about them here and here).

Very few of these supposed new tools are available yet, and it seems like most of them would only be available if your district is paying for the premium Google For Education suite. It’s also not clear to me how much value-added these supposed enhancements really provide.

One tool was intriguing, though. It’s call Illuminate, and it will allow you to “talk” with academic papers. You can sign-up for the waiting list here. It might make some of those unintelligible papers more accessible to us non-academics.
