Enid High School isn’t your typical high school. By embracing AI in their math classrooms, they’ve seen a remarkable increase in math achievement. Their secret? Khanmigo, an AI tutor and teaching assistant that’s transforming how students learn.
In collaboration with Project ECHO and Oklahoma State University and with support from the Brock Family Community Foundation, Enid High School had a vision for using AI to support their math students. One instructional coach, Tyler Elders, notes, “Ms. Garis, our Math Department Head was the biggest factor of success we’ve had, her leadership was pivotal.”
The transformation was not coincidental. It was the culmination of strategic and purposeful decisions, and here we share five key drivers that can serve as a guide to other educational leaders:
1. Enable Teacher Ownership
The teachers at Enid were given early access to Khanmigo, which allowed them to get comfortable with it before introducing it to the students. This coupled with live-virtual and in-person professional learning opportunities empowered the teachers to better utilize the tool.
2. Choose One Thing
Before a full-scale implementation, the team decided to pilot Khanmigo in a Geometry class. This experimentation allowed them to monitor the results closely and recognize the tool’s potential in bridging the learning gaps for English Language Learners and Special Education students alike.
3. Leverage Fast, Actionable Data
Through Khanmigo tools like Class Snapshot, teachers could quickly group students based on student performance data, and make targeted assignments automatically based on student progress without spending unnecessary time manually processing data.
4. Increase Practice
Students utilized Khanmigo to maximize their class time by getting in more practice, with more just-in-time feedback. As a function of signing on to the Khan Academy platform and completing more practice exercises than ever before, students were producing data that teachers used to tailor assignments more accurately.
5. Encourage Math Discourse
Khanmigo was not just a learning tool; it was a conversation partner. The students were encouraged to articulate their doubts and questions, thereby fostering a more engaging learning environment that allowed them to fill in more educational gaps. Additionally, teachers noticed that students who are less comfortable asking questions out loud were now asking more questions than ever, directly to Khanmigo. As a result, they were getting more support and immediate feedback.
