Holidays mean celebrations. And celebrations, more often than not, mean sweets—lots of them.
Americans alone spent a record $36.9 billion on candy in 2021, with more than 600 pounds purchased just for Halloween. Needless to say, that’s a lot of candy wrappers. Unfortunately, the vast majority of them end up in landfills because most curbside recycling programs aren’t able to handle them.
The good news? Rubicon knows just how to turn this would-be trash into next-generation treasure.
Say Hello to Trash or Treasure
The Rubicon Trash or Treasure program gives you all the information and tools you need to become part of the circular economy revolution. Now, instead of sending your candy wrappers to a landfill or an ocean, you can give them a second life.
Here’s How It Works
Starting with Halloween 2023, Rubicon will be running a series of campaigns around various holidays. For the program to succeed, we need as many schools, organizations, and individuals as possible to participate.
Fortunately, participation is easy. Once you’ve ordered and received your Trash or Treasure box, just fill it up with wrappers and mail it back to our partner, g2 revolution, for free for processing when it’s full.
Upon arrival at the processing facility, the box is emptied and the wrappers are sorted, cleaned, and ground into small plastic pieces. Special machinery melts these pieces down into even smaller plastic balls, called pellets. These pellets are then used to create a multitude of new products—the circular economy in action!
Get Started
Visit the Trash or Treasure website to order your box today. You can also explore a variety of educational materials created in partnership with the National Wildlife Federation.
Don’t forget to spread the word to help others enjoy more sustainable celebrations!
