IWD 2025: Time to dismantle barriers, not just talk about them

As Principal of Strathcona Girls Grammar, I have the privilege of witnessing how education transforms lives, particularly for young women.

I see the confidence that grows when girls master complex ideas, the leadership that emerges when they are empowered to take initiative, and the resilience they develop when challenged to think critically and push beyond limitations. This is what fuels my hope and optimism as we mark International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025.

This year’s IWD theme—Accelerate Action—is a call to dismantle the systemic barriers that continue to limit opportunities for women. Progress is not inevitable; it demands bold steps, relentless advocacy, and unwavering commitment. Hard-won advancements remain fragile, at risk of erosion without sustained effort. We must intensify our actions, ensuring gender equality is not an aspiration but a lived reality in every classroom, workplace, and community.

When Strathcona Girls Grammar was founded a century ago, in the wake of World War I, women fought for expanded rights, entered the workforce in growing numbers, gained access to university education, and stepped into political life. It was the perfect moment to establish a school dedicated to educating and empowering future generations.

One hundred years on, gender equality has seen remarkable progress, yet in key areas, change remains sluggish. Women now make up 61% of university graduates and 44% of the Australian Parliament—a remarkable increase from 26% in 2002—demonstrating that momentum is possible. Yet, the 2024 Chief Executive Women (CEW) Census reveals that men still hold 91% of CEO positions in the S&P/ASX 300, and at the current rate, gender parity will not be reached until 2158—five generations from now—according to data from the World Economic Forum. True change requires a paradigmatic shift in thinking, and that includes men re-evaluating their roles in advancing equality, fostering genuine social cohesion, and driving meaningful societal progress. Gender equity is not a women’s issue—it is a collective responsibility.

As we mark International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to a future where every woman has the freedom to shape her own path. The world is evolving rapidly, demanding adaptability, innovation, persistence and resilience. Education lays the foundation, but it cannot be the sole driver of change. Young women need clear pathways beyond school—mentorships, internships, and leadership opportunities—ensuring they do not just enter the workforce but shape it. At the same time, boys must be educated to become active allies in gender equality. Social justice is not a static achievement but a movement that thrives only when embraced by all.

Businesses, policymakers, not-for-profits, and the media are critical in breaking barriers. Workplaces must implement equitable hiring practices, transparent promotion policies, and leadership development programs to ensure women advance based on merit, not despite bias. Flexibility—parental leave, hybrid models, and return-to-work programs—must become the norm, enabling women to thrive without compromise.

We cannot afford complacency. Gender equality is not just about careers but also about safety, dignity, and the fundamental right to shape society. Pay gaps persist, crimes against women remain alarmingly prevalent, and misogyny thrives in digital spaces. Representation alone is not enough; we need systemic change where women’s voices are heard in boardrooms, parliaments, and every sphere of influence.

The choices we make today don’t just open doors—they reshape long-standing barriers. Accelerating action now advances women, strengthens economies, enriches communities, and ensures justice and opportunity for all.

The moment is now, and the responsibility is ours.
