Lava fountain height soars in latest episode of Hawaii volcano eruption

A tall fountain of lava is spewing from a volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island again. Webcam video from Wednesday shows vigorous streams of bright red molten rock in the latest episode of an on-and-off eruption. Lava fountains reached 600 feet Tuesday night and have been dropping. The eruption began Dec. 23 in a crater at the summit of Kilauea in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This is the eruption’s 12th episode. Scientists say it began Tuesday morning with sporadic, small flows. It became continuous fountaining in the afternoon. No residential areas have been threatened by lava.
