Dozens of people are sick in a new outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infections under investigation by federal authorities.
A source of the pathogen has not yet been found, according to the Food and Drug Administration. A total of 63 patients had been confirmed in the outbreak as of Nov. 27.
The FDA has not reported where the patients live or what their ages are.
The agency has begun traceback efforts but is not yet reporting what food or foods are being traced. No onsite inspections or sample testing have been initiated.
Investigations continue in several other outbreaks.
For an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections the patient count has increased to 25. No patient information has yet been reported by the FDA. The agency has initiated traceback efforts but has not reported what food or foods are being traced.
For an outbreak of E. Coli O121:H19 infections traced to carrots and baby carrots, the investigation continues. One patient has died and 38 others have been sickened. Fifteen patients have required hospitalization. Grimmway Farms has recalled more than 40 brands and sizes of carrots in relation to the outbreak.
For an E. coli O26:H11 outbreak, the patient count stands at nine. The FDA has not yet identified a source of the pathogen, but all of the sick people have been infected by the same strain. The agency has initiated traceback efforts, but has not reported what food it is tracing. It has also begun onsite inspection and sample testing but has not reported what location is being inspected or what is being tested.
