New research reveals that women’s brains, particularly the hippocampus and amygdala, undergo changes during pregnancy linked to postpartum depression. A study with pregnant women showed an increase in amygdala volume in those with depression symptoms, and an increase in hippocampus volume in those who found childbirth stressful.
