Sadly, Bill Gates Continues To Demonstrate His Cluelessness About How Education Works

 

Bill Gates is continuing his terrible track record demonstrating any kind of knowledge about how education works.

After previously making ridiculous promises about the role of AI in tutoring, last night (on Oprah Winfrey’s special on Artificial Intelligence), he claimed that AI would “understand how to motivate” students.

Millions of teachers, including me (who has happened to write four books on student motivation), are certain to find that laughable.

We know that the building block of student motivation is relationship, and AI ain’t ever going to be able to build that.

Granted, once the motivation is there, and research shows it is for about five percent of students, AI will work great.

Why can’t these tech bros be satisfied with the decent ways AI can actually help education – with modification of lesson materials, with automated feedback on pronunciation for ELLs, with making letters of recommendation easier to write?

Those are not nothing.
