Using the Power of E-Portfolios to Enhance Student Engagement

In the evolving landscape of online education, post pandemic, it has become increasingly essential to use technology to foster student engagement. Among the many digital tools available, e-portfolios have emerged as a powerful means for enhancing student involvement, motivation, and learning outcomes. E-portfolios are digital collections of student work that showcase achievements and learning progress and have the power to transform the educational experience for students.

An e-portfolio is a dynamic, multimedia platform where students can compile and reflect on their work. Some examples of content may include academic work, projects, and personal achievements. Several platforms are available for creating e-portfolios, Google sites being the most popular. It is available for free with an existing Gmail account and a lot of institutions prefer the flexibility of Google sites. Unlike traditional paper-based portfolios, e-portfolios allow for the integration of various text, images, videos, and hyperlinks in one platform. This multidimensional approach not only enriches the portfolio content, it allows the student to showcase their 21st century digital skills with potential internships and employers. 

Benefits of Enhancing Student Engagement Through E-Portfolios

• Ownership and Autonomy: E-portfolios empower students to take ownership of their learning. By selecting and digitally curating their work, students develop a sense of autonomy and responsibility. This ownership is important as it fosters motivation, leading to greater engagement and investment in their own education.
• Reflective Practice: The process of creating an e-portfolio involves regular reflection on one’s work. Students critically assess their strengths, weaknesses, and growth over time. This reflective practice enhances self-awareness and encourages a growth mindset, where students view challenges and failures as opportunities for improvement.

In most humanities courses that involve reflective writing, e-portfolios can be seamlessly integrated into the coursework. In STEM courses, e-portfolios can also be aligned with the college learning outcomes (CLO’s) and assigned as a project. This integration ensures that e-portfolios are not viewed as an additional task, rather as an integral part of the learning process.
• Ensure Privacy and Security: Ensuring the privacy and security of student data is of highest importance. Educators should educate students about digital citizenship and responsible sharing practices. It is good practice to obtain student permission prior to sharing e-portfolios. Also, most e-portfolio platforms allow students to integrate their portfolios with their email, so they can be transferred to personal accounts after the students leave the educational institution.
